An article should end when its useful work is complete

Identify the work each section performs

Read the draft and write a short purpose beside each section. It might establish a distinction, explain a method or help the reader decide what to do next. If two sections perform the same work without adding useful depth, consider combining them. If an essential step is missing, add it even when the draft already feels long. Length is an editorial consequence of the material and audience, not evidence of expertise or a guarantee of search visibility by itself.

Distinguish depth from repeated reassurance

Useful depth explains conditions, examples, exceptions or reasoning that changes understanding. Repeated claims that a method is important add fewer options for the reader. Check whether illustrative examples reveal different aspects of the task or merely repeat the same point with another noun. Keep the necessary qualifications intact when shortening. An accurate conditional statement should not become an absolute rule just because the shorter version reads more smoothly or fits an attractive layout more conveniently.

Test the ending against the original question

Return to the reader task identified in the brief. Can the person now act or understand the decision within the article's stated scope? End with the relevant next step or practical implication rather than a generic recap that restarts the introduction. If important questions remain outside the scope, direct readers to suitable help. A brief article can be complete for a narrow purpose, while a long article can still omit its most useful explanation. The review should follow the task rather than an arbitrary ideal length.
